“I hate That I Always Do That” – Knowing Yourself

Hello and welcome to week two of 2017. I’m going to assume that you’ve had a great first week of resolutions… Counting all those calories so that you can work them off at the gym, right after you’ve had your 30 minutes of quiet time with your bible, right?

Let’s all laugh together.

It’s usually around 14 days in to “resolution season” when the often inevitable feeling of failure begins to overwhelm people. Do you ever catch yourself thinking, “flip, why do I ALWAYS do that!?” With such good intentions, why do we keep doing the very opposite.

“What I don’t understand about myself is that I decide one way, but then I act another, doing things I absolutely despise…” – us humans have been doing this (and feeling confused about it) since biblical days! Paul wrote that in Romans, a scripture worth checking out if it interests you. Romans 7:15-20 (the NLT version says it well).

None of us are perfect. Failure along this journey is inevitable.

Unfortunately, at the core of human nature is a condition that says, “you’re going to mess up”. Which is disappointing for obvious reasons.

Now, there are two kinds of people in the world, (that’s a lie, there’s more than that, but humor this thought). Pessimists will say, “what’s the point of trying at all.” and the optimist will say, “I guess we’ve got some work to do.” And that’s the key.

The key is understanding that we hold the power in our response. In all of us, we have a great deal more positive than we do negative, it’s up to us where we put our energy and which characteristics we draw on in order for the good to stand out above the bad.

At the beginning of 2016 I took the Myer Briggs 16 personalities test and found it to be a huge benefit. As I read the results I found myself thinking, this is so accurate! This is absolutely me! That makes so much sense! Why didn’t I do this sooner! – My response was this because we are all looking to be understood. It feels good to be understood.

It clearly articulated and put into words everything I already knew about myself but struggled to understand. Being able to understand the science to my personality, and draw parallels between what was on paper vs. real life behaviour helped me improve the areas where I knew I fell short.

I have taken the test 3 times in the last year, each time getting the exact same result! I understand there are many of these tests out there, but 16 Personalities is by far the best one I’ve done and I would highly recommend it!

Educating yourself in anything will give you an advantage in that field. So to be educated about yourself can only mean you’ll have an advantage in life.

Knowing how you behave in the workplace means you’ll know what needs to be done to get that promotion you’ve been hankering after, or help you land the client you’ve been chasing.

Knowing what gives you energy will help you spend your time right, with the people who best compliment you. Give it a go! I promise you won’t regret it.
